'Girl on Beach'
current solo exhibition
Australian artist duo Gelbell paint together on the same pieces simultaneously. The works, depicting figures, are inspired by their observations while painting on the island. This body of work draws from the long history, vibrant colours, native flowers and pines, and the unique blend of tourists and local cultures in Ibiza.
People are Gelbell’s sole inspiration; the figures capture commonalities among individuals. Each piece holds a personal memory for Gelbell, who chooses not to reveal these stories, instead allowing viewers to connect through everyday scenes, motifs, and body language.
Metres of canvas lie flat as Gelbell builds layers upon layers of paint. The paint is sculpted and pushed with hands, feet, and brushes while simultaneously being carved away to reveal figures. The works are direct, reminiscent of ancient pictographs on cave walls, detailing the life and customs of the everyday.
In their signature observational style, Gelbell pushes the boundaries of a
conventional studio, creating pieces that invite personal connection and
interpretation.
